The best spots for live music on San Juan Island

Home / Travel / The best spots for live music on San Juan Island

San Juan Island might be famous for its wildlife and nature views, but what you might not know is that it has a prominent, dedicated arts and music scene. San Juan Island’s Friday Harbor was once voted one of the top 10 American art towns by America the Beautiful, and the amount of talented local writers, visual artists, and musicians attests to this. If you’re a music lover, there are a myriad of spots for good live music you can check out while you’re in the area. Here are a few of the popular ones:

San Juan Historical Museum Lawn

During Wednesday nights in the summertime, San Juan Museum’s lawn becomes the site of “Music on the Lawn,” a free, family-friendly summer concert series where you can also grab a drink and a snack to munch on while you enjoy the tunes. Artists play a variety of genres here from big band to acoustic folk to good, old-fashioned rock and roll. Just keep in mind that there are no pets or alcohol at this event.

San Juan Community Theatre

If you love musical theatre, opera, and vocal music, San Juan Community Theatre has a host of performances that tell stories through music with drama and panache. But if you prefer jazz, rock, or country, the community theatre also hosts strictly musical performances from bands and solo artists alike. Ticket prices are generally affordable, so you probably won’t have to spend much for a good time here.

Port of Friday Harbor

It’s not unusual to hear live music as you walk along the docks of Friday Harbor’s port. Similarly to the Historical Museum, the Port of Friday Harbor also has a free summer concert series known as “Music in the Park.” You’ll see boats coming in and out of the port and sailing peacefully across the water as you’re serenaded by the sweet tunes of local musicians.
