Taking a trip to New Orleans for Fat Tuesday? Hopefully these tips for getting around will help you enjoy the event without stressing about the things you’re missing.

Transportation

Expect traffic to be unbelievably congested. You will see most routes around the city blocked off by police barricades. Check with your hotel ahead of time, and ask specifically about shuttle service to the parade routes. Your hotel may also suggest alternative points to board buses or taxis that are easier to get around.

Routes

Parade routes go from empty to crowded in moments. A front row spot quickly turns into row four or five by the time the parade begins. If you’re planning on attending a weekend parade, get there at least four hours ahead of time.

For those who do show up late, try to avoid the temptation to move unoccupied chairs or ladders. You will often see families congregating year after year in the same spots, and friends work together to reserve seating. Find a comfortable spot to set up and wait for the parade to begin. You’ll find your spot when things get going.

Arrange Meetups

Mardi Gras is a massive event, and most people have never seen anything like it. In case of separation, decide on a meeting spot. Give children cards with the name, address, and phone numbers for the hotel you are staying at. A and pre-arranged meeting place, like a plaza or a coffee shop away from the action, is perfect for extended absences. Remember too that officers are well trained for these situations, so kids can go to an officer for help if need be.
